I just can't understand what they hoped to be doing,
Who sent them to their deaths with an unswerving arm.
It's just so unforgiving, so cruel and inhuman
To leave them there, eternally calm.
The indifferent audience wrapped up in its furs
And some woman whose face, distorted with grief,
Kissed the frozen blue lips which had only just kissed her
Took her gold wedding band and threw it back at the priest.
With pine they were buried, with dirt they were covered,
And the people went back to discuss in their home
That the worst had passed by, and the world could recover
After all they would soon have to starve on their own.
And no one thought to get down on their knees
To make it clear to these boys that in a land such as this,
Even sparkling victories simply just lead from
The bottomless pit to unattainable bliss.
I just can't understand what they hoped to be doing,
Who sent them to their deaths with an unswerving arm.
It's just so unforgiving, so cruel and inhuman
To have left them there, eternally calm.
